Japanese Bento Isn’t Just from Convenience Stores! You’ll Find Even Better Ones at Supermarkets

Japanese bento isn’t limited to convenience stores. Convenience store bentos are often composed mainly of fried foods, seemingly designed to help you consume as many calories as possible.

However, if you visit a Japanese supermarket, you can enjoy traditional Japanese-style bentos that include vegetables and other healthy options.

Supermarket Bentos Are Cheaper than Those from Convenience Stores

Supermarket bentos are not only cheaper than convenience store bentos, but they also tend to be more colorful and varied.

For example, the bento I bought today included three different types of rice, including mountain vegetable rice (sansai okowa), along with grilled fish and simmered dishes, offering a truly authentic Japanese experience.

While the price of convenience store bentos typically ranges from 500 to 600 yen depending on the type, you can purchase a supermarket bento for around 400 yen.

The bento I bought was from a discount supermarket called “Sandy,” and it cost about 300 yen (approximately $2), which is extremely affordable.

Overseas, $2 might not even get you a single rice ball, so this level of affordability is impressive.

If you ever visit Japan and want to buy a bento, convenience stores are good, but supermarkets offer more colorful and cheaper options. Be sure to check out a supermarket during your visit!
